The Four Cellular Horsemen - PQQ, CoQ10, NMN And NADH

The Four Cellular Horsemen - PQQ, CoQ10, NMN And NADH

Researchers on anti-aging, longevity, cancer prevention and other vitally important health concerns have lately begun to turn their focus toward the concept of synergy. The word synergy (say “SIN-er-gee”) is derived from the Greek word “sunergos” which means working together. Synergy, in the medical world, means that two compounds, each having their own individual effects, when put together will have a greater combined effect larger than their individual effects. In other words, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

A common example of this type of synergy is illustrated by curcumin, an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that comes from turmeric root, and piperine, an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound found in black pepper. Although both curcumin and piperine have their own health benefits, when combined, the piperine increases the absorption and bioavailability of the curcumin by up to an astounding 2000 percent, greatly enhancing the benefits of taking them together as opposed to using them as singular ingredients.

So it goes without saying that if researchers can pinpoint these types of synergistic relationships between and among compounds, these same compounds could then be incorporated into supplement formulas that have the potential to benefit you in ways that simply taking the individual supplements could never hope to offer. This is precisely what we have done with our newest supplement, Nutriop® Life, combining four energy-boosting, anti-aging ingredients into one synergistically acting powerful supplement. Of course, each of the four ingredients, NMN, NADH, PQQ and CoQ10, also have specific individual health benefits, which make them  invaluable additions to the formula.

The Four Cellular Horsemen - PQQ, CoQ10, NMN And NAD

We are very excited by the research behind our selection of the specific compounds in Nutriop® Life, and want to explain how these ingredients interact with each other to bring you the benefits they do. First of all, let’s get a look at PQQ and CoQ10, what they are and how they interact with one another. Then we will take a bit of a deeper dive into the biochemistry behind NMN and NADH, delving into the results of a new review study which explores their synergistic potential.

PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone)

PQQ stands for pyrroloquinoline quinone and is a vitamin-like compound found in soil, plants, some fruits such as kiwi, yeast, and some bacteria. PQQ works in many of the same ways that the B vitamins affect your body, and is what is known as a cofactor, which are helper-like inorganic molecules that help enzymes in the body carry out their necessary functions. PQQ is a powerful antioxidant, which are molecules that fight harmful free radicals in your body and also influences multiple biochemical pathways that are crucial to your health. One of PQQ’s most important functions is to optimize mitochondrial function.

As you may recall, your mitochondria are tiny organelles found within your cells that function as the literal power generating stations for the production of cellular energy and are crucial to life. Many of the diseases and problems related to aging can be traced back to mitochondrial dysfunction. PQQ helps to reduce oxidative stress on the mitochondria and has actually been shown to stimulate new mitochondria formation, known as biogenesis. This is important, as the number of mitochondria is known to diminish as you age.

By reducing mitochondrial oxidative stress, this helps to protect neurons from damage and promotes cognitive health. PQQ also helps to promote cognitive health by enhancing the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein-like molecule that is vital to the growth and healthy functioning of neurons. PQQ interacts synergistically with the next ingredient in Nutriop® Life, CoQ10.

CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10)

Although CoQ10 occurs naturally in the human body and is also found in many foods, there is evidence that with aging the levels of CoQ10 in the body decline. CoQ10, like PQQ, is a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative damage. CoQ10, as you can surmise from its name, is a coenzyme, which acts similar to PQQ’s cofactor job as a helper molecule for enzymatic cellular reactions, only coenzymes are organic (containing carbon-hydrogen bonds) molecules instead of inorganic like PQQ.

Used alone, CoQ10 is often given along with cholesterol lowering statin drugs, to help combat the liver damage and muscular pain associated as side effects of these medications. CoQ10 is also used by some cardiologists, along with regular cardiac medications, to treat heart failure as well as other heart conditions. This makes sense when you understand that like PQQ, CoQ10 enhances mitochondrial energy production. When combined with PQQ, CoQ10 works synergistically to enhance mitochondrial energy production even further as well as assisting in the modulation of cellular signaling pathways. The combination of PQQ and CoQ10 has been shown to boost cognitive performance by increasing information processing and improving attention.

NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide)

Nicotinamide mononucleotide is actually a derivative of niacin, also known as Vitamin B3. NMN’s most important role is in its function as an intermediary molecule for the biosynthesis of NAD, a vital coenzyme necessary for hundred of enzymatic reactions and which plays a crucial role in aging, metabolism, DNA repair, gene expression and is absolutely critical to human health as well as longevity. NMN naturally declines as you age. In numerous research studies using mouse models, NMN has been shown to help conditions including Alzheimer’s dementia, diabetes and ischemia, all diseases which are associated with aging.

Studies which have looked at NMN supplementation have seen an increase in NAD+ as a result, as well as reduced age-related fatty tissue inflammation, improved insulin secretion, improved functioning of mitochondria and also improved neuronal functioning in the brain, among other benefits. NMM works synergistically with our fourth ingredient, NADH, to activate the Krebs energy pathway in your cells.

NADH - (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide)

NADH, like NAD+ and NMN, is vital to mitochondrial energy production, as it reacts with naturally occurring oxygen inside your cells to produce energy. In addition to functioning as fuel for energy production in the cells, NADH is beneficial to the heart, brain, lungs, liver and kidneys. NADH is found in foods but is destroyed by cooking, and even if it does make its way into your digestive tract in foods, it is destroyed by gastric juices during the process of digestion.

Like our other ingredients, NADH works synergistically. In an important review study, published in the 22 December, 2020 issue of Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, the authors present compelling evidence that NADH can regenerate NAD+. NMN and NAD+ are well-accepted NAD+ boosters, working to increase NAD+ levels in the body. So it follows that if NADH can regenerate NAD+ (which it does) then combining NADH and NMN will have a synergistic beneficial effect.

So these are our powerful “four horsemen,” PQQ, CoQ10, NMN and NADH, that work synergistically together, providing you with a formidable force to protect your cells, enhance your mitochondrial function to give you more energy, and combat the mental and physical effects of aging. Remember the curcumin/piperine example of synergy we used in the beginning of this article? If you recall, piperine (the active ingredient in black pepper) was used to increase curcumin’s absorption. Turns out that piperine also works with many other compounds to help increase their bioavailability, so we’ve added that to our Nutriop® Life formula as well.
